Dr. Martin Welzel (*1972) begann seine musikalische Ausbildung in Bremen bei Michael Landsky , Wilfried Langosz (Orgel) und Käte van Tricht (Klavier). Er studierte an der Hochschule für Musik Saar in Saarbrücken (A-Examen in Kirchenmusik), wo Daniel Roth , Wolfgang Rübsam , Kristin Merscher und Gerald Hambitzer zu seinen wichtigsten Lehrern zählten. Nach weiterführenden Orgelstudien (Konzertreife und Solistendiplom) in Saarbrücken schloss sich ein vierjähriges Auslandsstudium bei Dr. Carole Terry an der University of Washington in Seattle (USA) an, wo er 2005 mit einer Dissertation über Jeanne Demessieux zum Doctor of Musical Arts promovierte. Darüber hinaus war er Stipendiat der Rotary Foundation .
Zusätzlich zu seiner Lehrtätigkeit an der Hochschule für Musik Saar in Saarbrücken, wo er u. a. 2006-2007 eine Lehrstuhlvertretung für Orgel übernommen hatte, führten ihn zahlreiche Konzertengagements durch Europa und die USA. Hierbei war er als Solist u. a. in der Kathedrale Notre-Dame und in Saint Sulpice in Paris, in der Washington National Cathedral , an der Southern Methodist University und im Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, an der Stanford University, in der Basilika Ottobeuren und der Johanneskirche in Helsinki zu hören. Weitere Konzerteinladungen werden ihn an den Dom von Helsinki , St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, den Berliner Dom , St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, La Madeleine in Paris und die Kathedrale St. John the Divine in New York City führen.
Sein umfangreiches Solo-Repertoire reicht von Alter Musik bis zu Werken zeitgenössischer Komponisten. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau, der Pianistin Alexandra Kertz-Welzel , gründete er 2004 das Emerald City Duo , das sich dem Repertoire des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts für Orgel und Klavier widmet. Für Naxos International hat er mehrere CDs mit Orgelwerken von Max Reger im Dom zu Trier aufgenommen (Naxos 8.557338 , 8.570455 und 8.570960 ).

Born in 1972, Martin Welzel received his musical training in Bremen, Germany, from Michael Landsky , Wilfried Langosz and Käte van Tricht . Later, he studied with Daniel Roth , Wolfgang Rübsam , Kristin Merscher and Gerald Hambitzer at the University of Music in Saarbrücken, Germany, where he earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in sacred music and organ performance, as well as an Artist diploma in organ performance. He holds a DMA degree in organ performance from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, where he studied with Dr. Carole Terry and wrote a dissertation on Jeanne Demessieux . In addition, he was the recipient of a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship.
In addition to his teaching activities at the University of Music in Saarbrücken, where he also was Acting Professor of Organ Performance and Improvisation from 2006-2007, Dr. Welzel has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. His engagements have included Notre-Dame Cathedral and Saint-Sulpice in Paris, Washington National Cathedral , Southern Methodist University and Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Stanford University, Ottobeuren Abbey and St. John’s Church in Helsinki . Future recitals include Helsinki Cathedral , St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, Berlin Cathedral , St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, La Madeleine in Paris and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.
His large repertoire spans from early music to works by contemporary composers. In 2004, Martin Welzel and his wife, Alexandra Kertz-Welzel , formed the Emerald City Duo , exploring the repertoire of the 19th and 20th century for organ and piano.
