Prof. Dr. Alexandra Kertz-Welzel ist Professorin für Musikpädagogik und Leiterin des Institutes für Musikpädagogik an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München. Sie studierte Schulmusik, Musikerziehung (Klavier und Cembalo), Musikwissenschaft, Germanistik und Philosophie an der Hochschule für Musik und der Universität des Saarlandes in Saarbrücken. Zu ihren wichtigsten Lehrern zählen Kristin Merscher (Klavier) und Gerald Hambitzer (Cembalo). In ihrer Dissertation (2000) untersuchte sie Beziehungen zwischen Musik und Gefühl in den Schriften frühromantischer Autoren. Von 1992 bis 2000 war sie Stipendiatin des Cusanuswerkes.

Von 2005 bis 2011 arbeitete sie im Schuldienst und als Dozentin für Musikpädagogik und Musikdidaktik an der Hochschule für Musik in Saarbrücken. Darüber hinaus war sie von 2002 bis 2005 Gastwissenschaftlerin und Gastdozentin für Komparative Musikpädagogik an der University of Washington in Seattle (USA).

Als Pianistin hat sich Alexandra Kertz-Welzel auf historische Aufführungspraxis und Klavier-Repertoire des 19. Jahrhunderts spezialisiert und ist als Solistin und Kammermusikerin in Europa und den USA aufgetreten. Zu ihren Forschungsinteressen zählen die Bereiche Komparative Musikpädagogik, Multikultureller Musikunterricht, Methoden des Musikunterrichtes, Allgemeinbildender Musikunterricht, Musikdidaktik, Social Justice, Classroom Management, Community Music, Gender Research, Philosophie der Musikpädagogik, Musikanthropologie und Musikästhetik. Darüber hinaus ist sie mit zahlreichen deutsch- und englischsprachigen Publikationen und Vorträgen auf Konferenzen in Deutschland, England, Finnland, Italien, Kanada und den Vereinigten Staaten international in Erscheinung getreten.

Ihr Buch Every Child for Music: Musikpädagogik und Musikunterricht in den USA (2006) ist die erste umfassende deutschsprachige Studie zur amerikanischen Musikpädagogik und des Musikunterrichtes in den USA seit den 1960er Jahren. Gemeinsam mit David G. Hebert veröffentlichte sie das Buch Patriotism and Nationalism in Music Education (2012). 

2004 gründetete Alexandra Kertz-Welzel mit Martin Welzel das Emerald City Duo, das sich dem Repertoire des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts für Klavier und Orgel widmet.

Biography: 

Dr. Alexandra Kertz-Welzel is Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Education at Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) in Munich (Germany). She completed her studies at Saarland University and the University of Music in Saarbrücken, where she earned master's degrees in music education, Germanics, philosophy, piano performance, and harpsichord performance. Her teachers include Kristin Merscher (piano) and Gerald Hambitzer (harpsichord). In 2000, she obtained a PhD in musicology from Saarland University, with a dissertation on aesthetics in literature and music during the early romanticism in the 19th century. In addition, she was a scholarship recipient of the Cusanuswerk Foundation from 1992-2000.  

From 2005-2011, she was Lecturer of Music Education and Philosophy of Music Education at the University of Music in Saarbrücken, and, from 2002-2005, Visiting Scholar and Guest Lecturer of Music Education at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA (United States).

As a pianist, Dr. Kertz-Welzel has been specializing in early keyboard performance practice and piano repertoire of the 19th century and has appeared as soloist and chamber musician in the United States and Europe. With research interests in general music education, methods, comparative music education, multicultural music education, Didaktik of music, social justice, classroom management, community music, gender studies, philosophy of music education, anthropology of music, and music aesthetics, she has published numerous articles in leading journals and appeared as guest speaker at international conferences in Germany, United Kingdom, Finland, Italy, Canada, and the United States.

Her book, Every Child for Music: Musikpädagogik und Musikunterricht in den USA (2006), is the first comprehensive German study describing Music Education in the United States since the 1960s. Along with David G. Hebert, she is co-editor of the book, Patriotism and Nationalism in Music Education (2012). 

In 2004, Alexandra Kertz-Welzel and Martin Welzel formed the Emerald City Duo, exploring the repertoire of the 19th and 20th century for piano and organ.
